Message	I know exactly what you mean. Pending on the type of flash that you have, try "bouncing" the flash. The fake result that you are talking about is a result of the flash directly striking the subject matter at full power and makes everything seem flat and fake. Try "bouncing" the flash will allow the high power flash to scatter light and bounce off of a white/reflective object. The result is a diffused, more natural lighting effect.
